It's a big fat juicy one today with two awesome interviews. We'll talk with Mike Tunez of Firelock Games about their new pirate tabletop game Blood and Plunder.  And he gives us the lowdown of what it takes to create a game of this magnitude and how they made their Kickstarter for it so outrageously successful.

Then we'll talk with David and Serena Reiland about the 1st annual International Pirate Awards - how it began and how you get to vote for your favorite pirate stuff.  And we'll dig into their Renaissance Festival Podcast a bit too.

Plus comedy from Marc Yaffee and music from Meeta Gajjar Parker.

Big thanks to Craig Buddy at History Of Pirates Podcast for simulcasting this episode.

It's Wonky Sound Day on UTC!  I'm on the road and forgot to pack my podcasting mic and there's a weird bumpy knocky sound during the interview.  The sound gods did not smile upon us this week.  Better next time. I promise.

But that doesn't mean it's not a great episode!  My guest is Shayna Vest from DressLikeAPirate.com and she is quite the character.  We'll talk a bit about pirates invading the Ren Faire scene and what it took to get a business selling pirate clothes up and running in the wild west days of the internet.

Mucho fun-o... Plus epic comedy from Chad Opitz and a great tune called "Appalachian Bound" by Time Sawyer.

Today's guest is very special.  Peter T. Leeson is an economist and author of "The Invisible Hand".  We're going to dig down into the economics of piracy in the Golden Age and why they had to work so differently from the merchant ships of the time.

What are Jolly Rogers really for (and when)?  Did Thomas Jefferson and the founding fathers look to pirates when designing their new democracy.  All this and more!

Peter was also the first name on my wishlist of guests when I started this show.  I'll explain why.

And a bit about my adventures in Colorado Springs with BBQ and donuts.

For extended show notes and more pirate goodies, visit www.UnderTheCrossbones.com

My guest on the show today is Captain Teach, head of the Phoenix Risen pirate clan.  I had no idea what pirate clans are all about, shy they exist, and what they do.  So this was educational for me and I hope for you too.

Teach gives us the lowdown on how he got into Phoenix Risen and how you can join the pirate clan you're looking at.  And we'll talk about how and why pirates have infiltrated the Ren Faire circuit.  Plus we'll dig into all the great projects he's heading up for the Sherwood Forest Faire, including summer camps for adults and kids.

Thank you for all your nice supportive notes about last week's missing episode.  We had a death in the family and I'll tell you about it at the top of the show.

Mark Hanna is a professor at UC San Diego and the author of "Pirate Nests and the Rise of the British Empire 1570-1740".  Yep, we're getting historical today.

We'll talk about how pirates needed allies on land to allow them to plunder as they did and how the big commercial companies tried to keep it from happening. Plus Puritans illegally minting coins?  Militant Protestantism?

Fascinating stuff in this talk.  You'll love it!

O'Craven is a great band with the very specific niche of Irish Pirate Rock, from San Jose, CA.  In this interview we dig into how they stumbled across the music they were meant to be playing.  We also talk a lot about how being way different from most bands has helped them stand out in a positive way.

Bonus! Since the band and I are in the same town, I finally got to do an in-person interview!  Thankfully I thought ahead enough to get video of the proceedings too. And since I had video of the interview, I figured I'd film my talky parts before and after the interview too, just for fun.

If there's anyone that's got all his pirate bases covered, Ben is that guy.  We dig into some of his many books, his thoughts on Black Sails, plenty of fencing stuff, and more.  This show is chock full and I still feel like we barely got to enough stuff.

You've been asking for them and now here they are!  Mark Summers and John Baur have done almost as much for pirates in popular culture in recent years as Johnny Depp has.  And they kind of did it my accident and the behest of others.

Talk Like A Pirate Day happens every September 19th.  In this interview I dig in with John and Mark on how the holiday started to happen and what they did to make it go as viral as it has.  (Clue: As little as possible)

I like pirate music, but I don't know nearly as much about it as Jack Gonzo does.  He does a great pirate music radio show every Wednesday at 9pm Central called Scoundrel's Inn.

During our talk, we dive a little into how Jack go started in this space.  And we talk a lot about how varied pirate music can really be.  He also suggests a great starter pack of bands if you're unfamiliar with the genre.

And you'll find out the one-genre of music that hasn't been touched by pirates yet.  (Which I may take care of soon...)

Plus comedy from Shawn Halpin about his favorite radio stations and a song called "Share My Pixie Dust" by Phil Johnson and Roadside Attraction.

I could NOT wipe the smile from my face during this interview!  John Chatterton is a wreck diver and treasure hunter.  He's been to Titanic, the Andrea Doria, and discovered a German U-Boat wreck.  But most importantly for this show, he was on the team the found the Golden Fleece, a pirate ship helmed by captain Joseph Bannister.

Recently, I discovered a short film called "Wedlocked" that acts as a mini-prequel to the first Pirates of the Caribbean film.  I couldn't figure out how I missed it before and got the director, Jim Byrkit, on the show to tell us about it.

Yes, the short is hilarious and you should watch it right here.

Happy 2016!  For the first show of the year, I've got a double interview for you.

First up, actor Ray Stevenson who portrays Blackbeard in season 3 (and 4) of Black Sails on Starz.  You've also seen him in the Thor movies, Divergent, and the TV show Dexter.  We get into stuff he's had to do for Black Sails that he's never done before, what went into their decision whether to use the Bristol accent, and why Ibiza is a "tough island".

Then an interview with the only other person running a podcast about pirates, Craig Buddy of the History of Pirates Podcast.  He and I talk about getting started in podcast and why pirates.  Plus how we came to such different formats for our shows.  And he tells a great story about when Julius Caesar was captured by pirates.
