Chris Bowes and his band Alestorm have been bouncing around the world playing their unique brand of pirate metal since 2007. They're fifth album, "No Grave But The Sea" was just released on May 26th. You'll hear a new track from the album on the show.
We'll dig into the beginnings of the band and how Chris ended up as the sole remaining original member. Plus how they think differently about themselves compared to their fans, how they manage to keep their pirate themes fresh, and of course... that keytar.
Under The Crossbones is a podcast all about pirate culture. Super excited to bring you Geoff Zanelli today! Geoff wrote the musical score for Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales. He's also credited with "additional music" on the first four POTC films. We talk about what that means (and it means way more than it sounds like).
Plus we'll dig into how he went about capturing some of the POTC1 feel while still bringing his own voice to this new score. And how he got in with Hans Zimmer after his years growing up in Orange County and going to the Berklee School of Music.
If you're new to the show, here are a few other episodes you might like to check out as a starting point.

Laura Sook Duncombe is the author of "Pirate Women: The Princesses, Prostitutes, and Privateers Who Ruled The Seven Seas". It's a fantastic book about female pirates throughout history, both in fact and fiction.
I got a ton of new info in my brain from this book and from my talk with Laura and I know you'll dig it too.
Viking pirate ladies? Check. Some Anne Bonny and Mary Read talk? Check. Cheng I Sao? Check. And tons more you had no idea ever existed.
Cosmopolitan Magazine rated 'Pirate Women' as the #1 book to read in 2017. And you may have heard Laura on This American Life (along with Mark Hanna) in their recent pirate episode.

Scott Graham is the host and resident pirate fan of Pirates 365 on YouTube. In the many dozens of videos he digs deep into every aspect of Pirates of the Caribbean. We're talking rides, movies, toys, video games, the whole shebang.
In our talk we dig into idea generation and how he comes up with some much stuff to post. Not to mention how to get through the days when we're not feeling up to putting something new together. (Hint: You, dear listener, are why we do it...)
And of course, we dork out hard about Disney and Pirates of the Caribbean!

Greg Engel aka Oddly O'Differous is the captain (because he's got the red coat) of Arrr Ink, a pirate comedy troupe that you can see at a variety of pirate fests in the Southeast US.
Like many of the groups we've talked to, Arrr Ink is a family affair with Greg's wife, sister, and brother in law getting in on the action.
We both do comedy, but in drastically different worlds. So we dig into all sorts of good comedy talk about atmosphere, venue, level of appropriateness, etc. You'll hear that he's waaaaay better with kids than I am. :)
