Kevin-John and Houston Tucker are the brains behind Legend Cove Trading Company. They're building a great pirate story around some cool pirate gear - Apparel, coffee, and fine art.
Kevin-John is also a Disney Master Artist whose purview is attraction art. He's got some great insight into the Disney Master Artist program. Some surprising ideas here.
And we get into their pirate backgrounds and how they decided to start Legend Cove. They've got some big, fun ideas for the company and it'll be fun to see how it all works.

Sean Loughman is a partner and curator at the Pirates Treasure Museum in St Thomas, Virgin Islands. The museum has loads of great shipwreck artifacts, pirate items, and Sean's specialty... coins. Lots and lots of coins.
During our talk we dig into lesser known but interesting pirates Jean Hamlin and Bartholomew Sharpe. Sean tells a great story about a controversial scandal around Spanish pieces of eight. And he tells us about the new shipwreck project he's working on that they're pretty darn sure is a legit pirate ship.
And after the interview I'll give you an update on Sean's and the museum's current situation post-hurricanes.

Carl Fismer lives the life of an adventurer. The type of life that they make books, movies and video games about. Affectionately called "Fizz", he's a treasure hunter that has dived some of the world's most famous shipwrecks including the Atocha and the 1715 and 1733 Spanish treasure fleets.
And in this talk, tales of peril, dangerous people, and daring escapes. And popcorn. Carl is like an underwater Indiana Jones (thankfully minus Shia Laboeuf.)

We dig into plenty of good Disney stuff here for fans of that stuff (like me..) And we talk about where Michael's very dense style of art comes from and how he's made art his life since attending Ringling.
And we'll hear the song "Cooper's Rum" from Ye Banished Privateers off their new album First Night Back In Port.

David Magee is the screenwriter of the fantastic movies Finding Neverland and Life of Pi. He's also working on the new Mary Poppins and Narnia films.
I'm a nut for anything Peter Pan/Captain Hook related, so this talk with David is really fun. We get into J.M. Barrie's life during the creation of Peter Pan and how David did his research. We talk plenty of Captain Hook and how he fits into the story of both Peter Pan and Barrie's life.
And we had to talk some Life of Pi too! It was a notoriously difficult book to adapt until David and Ang Lee got their hands on it. We'll dip our toes into Mary Poppins and Narnia too.

We dig into both of his pirate books "Pirate Hunter: The True Story of Captain Kidd" and "The Pirate Coast: Thomas Jefferson, the First Marines, and the Secret Mission of 1805".
Beyond pirates, we'll also talk Mark Twain's connection to standup comedy, little known stories from history, and all sorts of vice and naughtiness.

John Davidson is playing Captain Hook in the touring company of Finding Neverland The Musical. But that's only the latest project. He's survived the jungle of the entertainment business for over 50 years by being able to do lots of different things well and always considering new avenues to pursue.
You may remember him as the host of That's Incredible! on Sunday nights in the early 80's. Or maybe one of his many guest host stints on The Tonight Show during the Johnny Carson years. Or maybe as a host of Hollywood Squares.
Beyond his TV work, he's done loads of work in theater both on and off Broadway. He's also an accomplished musician with a ton of released recordings.

Kate Larsen and Shuhe Hawkins are living the pirate life in the mountains of Portland, Oregon. Seven Sails Winery, the Portland Pirate Festival, and their bands Bilge Rats and Pyrettes, and B.O.O.M. Plus the ship... Oh, the ship.
Amazing stories in this episodes... shipwrecks, storms, world records, burials at sea... I love people that say yes then figure out how to do what they just agreed to. And Kate and Shuhe are exactly those types.

Episode 100! Thanks for sticking with the show!
Spencer Smilanick aka Captain Spoo Diggity is the lead vocalist of The Pirates Charles. So many good "where did that name come from" stories in this episode! Where the band name came from will have you on the floor. Pull your car over before that section so you don't hit anything.
We'll go deep into how Spencer has crafted his pirate persona and is able to tell deeply personal stories through his music, often without the audience even knowing it. And we'll chat some biz stuff too about what it's like being such a different kind of band in the Los Angeles market.
And, of course, we'll spin a track from their new album Invictus called "Fortress of Five Kings".
And to celebrate the 100th episode of Under The Crossbones, I invited a bunch of past guests to call in and update us on what they're doing now. Interviews are great, but they're just a snapshot in time. Fun to catch up with all the cool folks we've been listening to the last couple years.

Poets have existed for centuries. So who's to say there weren't a few among the pirates as well? There certainly are now. Steve Sanders aka Blackbead and his group Seadog Slam are taking pirate poetry to Pirate Fests, Ren Faires, and Steampunk Fests.
This is one of those topics I never figured we'd be talking about on this show, but Steve does a great job explaining the magic of poetry. He takes us through his journey to becoming a pirate poet. And yep, he recites a really great one for us too.
If you're not a poetry person, you may be tempted to skip this episode. But I think you'll really dig it if you give it a listen.

James L. Nelson is a very prolific author of both fiction and non-fiction pirate books. All the way from Vikings through the American Civil War, he's got some unique takes on how pirates affect the world around them.
Not to mention great storytelling and a deep knowledge of sailing ships. We'll talk about his time on the Golden Hind after leaving the Hollywood grind. And how his idea of becoming a responsible adult was to become a novelist.
Really fun talk with a guy who obviously loves the sea and the people and things that float on it.
Under The Crossbones is a podcast all about pirate culture. Your host Phil Johnson (comedian, musician, and pirate geek) interviews the most interesting people in the pirate subculture: Actors, Authors, Historians, Musicians, Artists, Festival Founders, Clothing and Prop Designers, Treasure Hunters, Archaeologists, and more.

Chris Bowes and his band Alestorm have been bouncing around the world playing their unique brand of pirate metal since 2007. They're fifth album, "No Grave But The Sea" was just released on May 26th. You'll hear a new track from the album on the show.
We'll dig into the beginnings of the band and how Chris ended up as the sole remaining original member. Plus how they think differently about themselves compared to their fans, how they manage to keep their pirate themes fresh, and of course... that keytar.

Super excited to bring you Geoff Zanelli today! Geoff wrote the musical score for Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales. He's also credited with "additional music" on the first four POTC films. We talk about what that means (and it means way more than it sounds like).
Plus we'll dig into how he went about capturing some of the POTC1 feel while still bringing his own voice to this new score. And how he got in with Hans Zimmer after his years growing up in Orange County and going to the Berklee School of Music.
If you're new to the show, here are a few other episodes you might like to check out as a starting point.

Laura Sook Duncombe is the author of "Pirate Women: The Princesses, Prostitutes, and Privateers Who Ruled The Seven Seas". It's a fantastic book about female pirates throughout history, both in fact and fiction.
I got a ton of new info in my brain from this book and from my talk with Laura and I know you'll dig it too.
Viking pirate ladies? Check. Some Anne Bonny and Mary Read talk? Check. Cheng I Sao? Check. And tons more you had no idea ever existed.
Cosmopolitan Magazine rated 'Pirate Women' as the #1 book to read in 2017. And you may have heard Laura on This American Life (along with Mark Hanna) in their recent pirate episode.

Scott Graham is the host and resident pirate fan of Pirates 365 on YouTube. In the many dozens of videos he digs deep into every aspect of Pirates of the Caribbean. We're talking rides, movies, toys, video games, the whole shebang.
In our talk we dig into idea generation and how he comes up with some much stuff to post. Not to mention how to get through the days when we're not feeling up to putting something new together. (Hint: You, dear listener, are why we do it...)
And of course, we dork out hard about Disney and Pirates of the Caribbean!

Greg Engel aka Oddly O'Differous is the captain (because he's got the red coat) of Arrr Ink, a pirate comedy troupe that you can see at a variety of pirate fests in the Southeast US.
Like many of the groups we've talked to, Arrr Ink is a family affair with Greg's wife, sister, and brother in law getting in on the action.
We both do comedy, but in drastically different worlds. So we dig into all sorts of good comedy talk about atmosphere, venue, level of appropriateness, etc. You'll hear that he's waaaaay better with kids than I am. :)
