Erikka Innes of Pool Pirates

For extended show notes and more pirate goodies, visit www.UnderTheCrossbones.com

Erikka Innes is a comedian and filmmaker.  A few years back she made a short film called "Pool Pirates" that I was lucky enough to be in.

The film is about a crew of pirates that have lost their ship and take over a suburban backyard pool.  Very funny!

We talk a lot about the indie filmmaking process in this one and the learning curve of a first time filmmaker.

Plus comedy from Erikka Innes herself and a great song from Barbar O' Rhum called "Coeur de l'Ocean".

Tim Murphy is an animation trained artist with a new comic book series called Pirates of Padre Tiempo that you'll really dig if you're into comics.  We'll talk about the stories themselves, his Kickstarter to fund the second issue, and his artistic background.

We'll also dig into the perceptions of "family friendly" - both with people who want violence and sex with their stories and parents who may be waaaay overly concerned with stuff that's not there.  And we'll find out what Tim's story challenges were as an artist coming to the writing part.

The St Augustine Pirate Museum has one of the largest collections of real pirate artifacts anywhere.  And today we talk with two of the head honchos over there, Cindy Stavely and Captain Mayhem.

We'll dig into where they get their stuff and who Pat Croce is.  Plus the various ways that they educate people about pirate history and culture.  Everything from real sunken treasure to Hollywood.

And St Augustine is a mighty piratey place, so we also get into how they stay on the good side of the traditionalists and still entertain the tourists.

Dane Bennett ake Admiral Basi Drake is the lead singer for Pride of Bedlam, this year's International Pirate Awards winners for Favorite Band.

In this great talk we dig into how Dane discovered Ren Faires and the pirate scene after his divorce (and eventually met his current wife), how POB designs their music to stand out in the pirate folk genre, playing a character on stage and dealing with regular folks on stage.

Lots of good "inside the brain of performing artists" in this one.  And Dane tells us why he thinks pirates have stuck around longer than other characters.

Our first live episode!   We invade the Story Tavern in Burbank, CA to celebrate Talk Like A Pirate Day 2016!

Chris Roberts is the owner of Pirate Art Design in Los Angeles, CA.  They do set design for loads of cool Hollywood Stuff.  And Chris was nice enough to host us at this TLAPD event in Burbank.

Carlos Ragas is the lead actor of Pirates Dinner Adventure in Anaheim and a graduate of the Ringling Bros clown university.

These dudes are all major pirate fans who have let their love of the buccaneer guide their careers over the years.

Thanks to Ryan and Jon for coming out to hang with us.  And to the other people in attendance who didn't know there was going to be a live podcast, but played along anyway. :)

Scott is in deep with the Gasparilla festival and its various crewes and the the owner of PirateDirectory.com , a great resource site for pirates of all sorts.

Not to mention, Scott's just quite a character and we had a great talk.  Lots of laughs in this one. :)

Ye Banished Privateers is one of the hottest pirate bands in Europe and one of my personal faves.  Our first interview attempt resulted in some unfortunate sound problems.  But here in our second attempt, the gods of technology smiled upon us I had a great talk with somewhere between 4 and 87 members of the band.

We'll dig into the band's origin story, the crazy way they're recording their new album, and the pros and cons of having 30 (not kidding) people in a band.

Plus comedy from the always dangerous Dougie Almeida and <drum roll> a world premier song from Ye Banished Privateers new album called "First Night Back In Port"!

Javier Dominguez of Big Hat Pirates is on the show today.  Sure, we're talking about pirate hats.  Super bad ass custom pirate hats at that.  But we're also talking about creativity (of a form that I'm terrible at) and when and how an artist has to let go of his work and let the consumer do with it what they will.

This is a really great talk with a talented and forward-thinking artisan.

It's Wonky Sound Day on UTC!  I'm on the road and forgot to pack my podcasting mic and there's a weird bumpy knocky sound during the interview.  The sound gods did not smile upon us this week.  Better next time. I promise.

But that doesn't mean it's not a great episode!  My guest is Shayna Vest from DressLikeAPirate.com and she is quite the character.  We'll talk a bit about pirates invading the Ren Faire scene and what it took to get a business selling pirate clothes up and running in the wild west days of the internet.

Today's guest is very special.  Peter T. Leeson is an economist and author of "The Invisible Hand".  We're going to dig down into the economics of piracy in the Golden Age and why they had to work so differently from the merchant ships of the time.

What are Jolly Rogers really for (and when)?  Did Thomas Jefferson and the founding fathers look to pirates when designing their new democracy.  All this and more!

Peter was also the first name on my wishlist of guests when I started this show.  I'll explain why.

Teach gives us the lowdown on how he got into Phoenix Risen and how you can join the pirate clan you're looking at.  And we'll talk about how and why pirates have infiltrated the Ren Faire circuit.  Plus we'll dig into all the great projects he's heading up for the Sherwood Forest Faire, including summer camps for adults and kids.
