We're headed for North Africa this week to talk Barbary Pirates with Joshua London, author of Victory In Tripoli.
He'll take us through the basic timeline of these events that happened soon after the American Revolution and how the Barbary pirates forced America's hand into creating a navy.
We'll also talk about the various motivations behind writing a book on this subject, dealing with people reading stuff into it that may or may not be there... And kosher wine. It all fits together.

Clay 'Talderoy' Clement is that pirate that all the west coast pirates know, even if they're not sure they've ever met him. The Pirates Charles even wrote a song about him.
He's also the owner of Studio City Tattoo, a pirate themed tattoo shop in Hollywood, and one of the organizers of Pirate Invasion Long Beach.
We'll dig into his pirate background to see how he got his sea legs and his business background as a restaurateur before entering the tattoo and piercing biz. Plus Monty Python and bananas!

Shanna Lovette is the leader and songwriter of Tea and Strumpets. They're a relatively new group, but rising fast on the Pirate and Ren Faire scenes.
Somewhere between vocal group and musical theater, they've got a load of great original bawdy songs and choreography. We dig into why Shanna got the group together and how demand for their show has picked up.
Heads up... This episode, by nature, has a little bawdy talk in it. If you've got kids with you, maybe listen later. Or be prepared to discuss. :)

I'm so excited to bring you this show today! Robert Kurson is the author of "Pirate Hunters" a great book about John Chatterton and John Mattera finding a real pirate ship wreck - The Golden Fleece. His latest book, "Rocket Men" is about the Apollo 8 mission, NASA's first manned space flight to orbit the moon in 1968.
I've been trying to get Robert on the show for a couple years now and we finally made it happen. We dig into all his writings about adventurers on water and in space and how he manages to make the stories feel so completely personal.
And we do a shorty talk with Rich Manic aka Captain Festus McBoyle about their new music video and the new type of show they're doing.

We got together at Joan's place for a great talk about how they define this new project from their previous one Whiskey and Women. And we dig into how European audiences have embraced them and what their new album "Alluvium" has to offer. And even a sneak peak at the next album after that!

And now we'll dig into the mysteries of PROTC with the man himself! We talk about how he got connected to the pirate community and how he got his start in radio. And we talk a lot about the radio and music businesses. Some great behind the scenes stuff here.

T.F. Wright, with is co-creator Volkenfox, is the author of a visual novel called The Pirate's Fate. It's a "Choose Your Own Adventure" style pirate book for the modern age.
In our talk we discuss his strategies for keeping track of so many story lines at once, the changing nature of villains and how to keep them interesting, and why some people might be uncomfortable with anthropomorphised animals even though Disney and Warner Brothers have been using them for decades.

James Masciarelli is a former tech headhunter and nonfiction writer who's just released his first fiction novel, "Beyond Beauport" about a woman who discovers links to pirates in her family tree and goes hunting for a new lease on life because of it.
James tells us how he forged his own new lease on life and what he learned from the many high end CEOs in his previous work. And we go deep into his writing and research process on all the wonderful locations in his new book.

The Shark Alley Hobos are a sea shanty pirate band from Northern California and on today's show we'll talk with guitarists and singers Che Prasad and John Howard.
We dig into the show that inspired them to turn from rock music to sea shanties and how they developed their sound from there. We go deep into crowd work at gigs and how they decided to cover a Prince song. And they also tell us about the event that inspired their latest single "A Hobo's Life For Me".

Captain Jay Tucci is a longtime pirate entertainer as part of the Northeast Buccaneers and the Rogues Armada. And he's the author of a new children's book called Captain Jay and the Misfit Crew.
We dig into Jay's pirate history, how he deals with his own "misfit-ness", dealing with bullying, and the children's book publishing biz. Lots of good stuff in here.

A week or so ago I saw a press release about a new privateer shipwreck being worked on in Bermuda. And the head of the project, Bradley Roger of Eastern Carolina University's Maritime Studies Department, was nice enough to let me interrupt his vacation to tell you about it.
Some really interesting stuff here about how they decided why privateer vs pirate, how they can tell what country the ship belonged to, and how the early settlers of Bermuda benefited from the wreck.
And we dig into artifact conservation and dealing with various ownership issues too. Fun and educational, this one!

We've been doing a lot with the arts recently and I love it! On today's show we have Robin Flanagan from Crimson Pirates and Chris Leidenfrost of The Greatest Pirate Story Never Told.
We'll dig into how to Crimson Pirates sort of accidentally came to be. And after Chris joined, how he went into spin-off mode with The Greatest Pirate Story Never Told.
Lots of music, improv, and arts management talk in this one. Super fun!

All the way from New Zealand, Rich Manic is on the show today! Rich is the leader and aka of Captain Festus McBoyle's Travellin' Variety Show.
We dig into the status of the pirate scene in New Zealand, how Rich went from teaching special education kids how to come out of their shells and get on stage to being thrown into a pirate gig just because. And now that they're a huge deal in New Zealand, what's next?

Dave Burgess taught some of the toughest classes imaginable and compiled his ideas into Teach Like A Pirate. And now he's teaching others how to educate in a fun and experiential way.
I love talking to people that are using the mythos and iconography of pirates to do cool new things like the modern world. And if you're an educator, re-enactor, living history type or just have an interest in our broken education systems, you'll love this episode.

Cheryl Jones is one of those interesting people that will surprise you with the challenges she's willing to take on. And while many pirates went on the account after seeing Pirates of the Caribbean, Cheryl took the whole thing way farther.
Plenty of good pirate talk and how she extended that interest into the British Navy. And of course, the funny story of how she and I originally connected. :)
